Can you imagine sitting in a classroom without paper, pencils, or folders—knowing everyone else is prepared except you? What if your family simply couldn’t afford the supplies you needed for school? Would you feel embarrassed, discouraged, frustrated, or left out?
For nearly 1,000 children in Manitowoc County each year, this is a reality. Starting school without basic supplies puts students at an immediate disadvantage and can limit their opportunity for success. That’s why KAN Cool for School, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, was established in 2004—to ensure every child in Manitowoc County has the tools they need to start the school year with confidence.
KAN partners with local school districts to identify students in need, who are then invited to attend the annual August drive-through event. Each year, approximately 1,000 children and their parents participate, receiving backpacks and $30 OfficeMax gift certificates to purchase essential school supplies.
In addition, KAN volunteers assemble and deliver cases of school supplies to schools throughout the county. During the school year, teachers discreetly access extra materials from the “Magic Closet,” ensuring students’ privacy is always protected.
The program costs approximately $45 per child—about $45,000 annually. KAN relies on the generosity of individuals, businesses, community groups, and grant funding to make this possible.
