Imagine walking into a classroom without paper, pencils, or folders—while every other student is prepared and ready to learn. For many children, the inability to afford basic school supplies can lead to feelings of embarrassment, frustration, and discouragement before the school year even begins.
For nearly 1,000 children in Manitowoc County each year, this is a reality. Starting school without essential supplies places students at an immediate disadvantage and can impact both confidence and academic success.
That’s why KAN Cool for School, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 2004: to ensure every child in Manitowoc County begins the school year equipped, confident, and ready to succeed.
KAN works closely with local school districts to identify students in need and invite families to the annual August drive-through event. Each year, approximately 1,000 children receive backpacks and $30 Meijer gift certificates to help purchase the school supplies they need.
Beyond the annual event, KAN volunteers assemble and distribute additional school supplies to schools throughout the county. During the school year, teachers can discreetly access extra materials through the “Magic Closet,” allowing students to receive support while preserving their dignity and privacy.
Providing these resources costs approximately $45 per child—nearly $45,000 each year. KAN relies on the generosity of individuals, businesses, community organizations, and grant funding to continue serving local students and families.

In addition, we stock area schools with supplies for distribution to children in need our program may have missed.
